Hellbugs, Irathients and psychic visions, oh my! "The Devil in the Dark" from tip to tail.
In the woods outside Defiance, a jogger with some sweet vintage shoes gets attacked and killed by some unseen creatures.
Back in town, Irisa is exercising with her knives, in a Tai Chi-meets-Ginsu sort of ritual. A butterfly lands on one of her blades and she gets freaked. We get it, girl. We hate bugs too.
Rynn, the Irathient from the first episode, gets into an argument with a xenophobic fruit vendor after she licks his fruit (!). Irisa intervenes. Sukar, the Irathient dude with the top hat from Episode 1, questions Irisa why she's hanging out with humans.
Kenya is entertaining a client who has some sort of cooking/bacon grease fetish. While in flagrante delicto, a giant creature bursts through his chest! Call Ripley!
After the body of the jogger is found, Nolan and Irisa investigate. She sees the butterfly again and shortly after experiences a vision of a young Irathient girl in a field. The vision seems to cause her pain. Okay, now we get why the butterfly maybe freaked her out earlier.
Over at the Tarr residence, Christie's staying with the family since Rafe refuses to accept her engagement to Alak. Datak makes an obnoxious comment about the river otter she cooked in Castithan (we don't blame him - it looks gross). But Christie's been studying her Rosetta Stone because she understands everything. AWKWARD.
Before the teen angst can get too high, Hellbugs - the creatures that killed the jogger and Kenya's john - attack! Datak fends them off.
The Tarrs bring Christie to Rafe and Stahma, ever scheming, tells him Alak saved his daughter. Rafe's eternally grateful. Doc Yewll arrives and confirms her suspicions - all the Hellbug attacks have been purposeful, as the victims (or intended ones) were sprayed with phermones that cause Hellbugs to get lethal.
Nolan's pieced together that the two victims bilked an Irathient family out of land years earlier (and Rafe knew about it - hence why Christie was targeted for revenge). Irisa has another painful vision of the Irathient girl and realizes it's Rynn.
Irisa confronts Sukar, the top hat dude, over Rynn's whereabouts and mentions her visions. Sukar tells Irisa she has the gift of sight, implying that their God Irzu has blessed her and she's special. Sukar offers to help her channel her visions to find Rynn through a ancient and sacred Irathient ritual.
Sure enough, it works, and Irisa's vision takes her to the past, where Rynn's parents were murdered by the two victims from earlier in the episode. Irisa also sees where Rynn's hiding - the mines.
Irisa, Nolan, Sukar and Tommy head to the mines and they are packing HEAT.
Waiting for them is the Queen Hellbug - and Rynn. She's got a glass container full of pheromones she's planning on throwing on Nolan & Co.
Irisa tries to reason with Rynn, but it doesn't work. She disarms Rynn and Nolan grabs the container and throws it on the Queen, so all the other Hellbugs attack her. Oh, yeah, and then Nolan blows them all up.
Back in town, Rafe brings Christie to Alak's and gives his blessing for the two to be together, still grateful that Alak "saved" his baby girl (nice work, Stahma).
With Rynn in jail, Nolan sits by Irisa's bedside as she has nightmares, the result of her power/curse and conflicted identity. Is she a human raised alien? A child of Irzu blessed with a gift? A asskicking ninja? Okay, we're pretty sure the latter is not in question.
