A deadly plague, knows as the "Irath flu" and only fatal to humans, spreads through Defiance. Doc Yewll lets Nolan and Amanda know a colleague of hers from the Bay Area sent a cure, and it was dropped just past the Badlands.
Meanwhile, Christie falls ill and her prognosis isn't very good.
The town council - despite Amanda's opposition - votes that Irathients be quarantined, since they spread the disease. Irisa isn't willing to go easily and fights with Rafe, but is eventually subdued.
The Irathients are rounded up and locked in Rafe's mines.
While all this is going on, Connor (stuck in town) and Nolan head off to pick up the cure. The have guy talk and Connor admits he once got Amanda pregnant, but she got an abortion. Talk about spilling the T!
Before blabbermouth Connor can get even more personal, the two guys are stopped by the Earth Republic. They are blocking all exists to and from town. They're prepared to not let th guys through, but Nolan warns them if the town doesn't get their medicine, they'll blame Earth Republic and any hopes of a future alliance can be kissed goodbye. They're allowed to pass.
Except when they get back to town with the meds, some Irathients, angry about the quarantine, kidnap them and hold the cure hostage.
Datak, in an effort to be the town hero, lies to the Irathients that he's on their side and then kills all of them, except a female. She gets the better of him and nearly chokes him to death until Connor manages to distract her long enough for Datak to kill her.
Get this - Datak, humiliated at having been bested by a woman, kills Connor rather than deal with his embarrassment. He'd kill Nolan, too, except an ill Nolan's passed out.
The cure is distributed and all is well.
Even Irisa, who generally is more pissed off than her usually grumpy self, has a nice moment with Nolan. He's about the only person she trusts and even that's on shaky ground.
Amanda gets on the radio to thank Datak for his help in securing the cure, an opportunity that Datak takes to announce that he's going to be running against Amanda in the upcoming election. Ruh roh.
Meanwhile, Quentin delivers the mysterious golden artifact to Nicky. As promised, she reveals that his mother was bipolar and when her mania became destructive - she almost killed the kids - Nicky helped Rafe send her away to California (oh, yeah, Nicky and Rafe were sleeping together at the time). Quentin, furious with his dad, takes off for CA.
Meanwhile, Nicky meets with her old buddy Doc Yewll and reveals that she's got the golden goodie, called the Kaziri. She wants Yewll to rejoin their cause. Given this thing was enough to get Nicky to try mass genocide, we're curious what that cause could be....
