The maglev spur Rafe spoke to Amanda about is a depot along the proposed train route the Earth Republic is building from coast to coast. If the spur is built in Defiance, the town will have the ability to trade its gulanite ore with other towns all across North America. As owner of the gulanite mines, this could be a huge windfall for Rafe McCawley.
Standing at five feet tall, Jessica Nichols plays all the Liberata in Defiance, including Bertie (Rafe's housekeeper) and Jered, the NeedWant bartender. Since Jered is male, Jessica's voice is replaced with that of actor Stan Sellers in post production.
Stahma uses finger apsayo to knit part of an indolano - a Castithan afghan composed of several different hexagonal patterns (called egwo). Seems benign enough - just like her smile.
Pow, which the Castithans discuss here, are a genetically-wuzzled combination of old Earth pigs and cows, inadvertently created by the terraformers. Pow farms can be found all throughout the game world. Their meat as become a staple of Votan cooking (a "bowl of pow" is made with onion, noodles and the Votan spice hangobolo.
Did you catch the lamp, pickaxe and spectacles in this scene? Or the human skeletal remains? People have discovered this cave long ago - at least dating back to the 1800's - and the cave paintings look much, much older than that....
Right before shooting the series, Mia Kirshner was involved in a bad bike accident - so some of the cuts, scrapes and bruises you see are not just make-up!
Adreno is a nasty drug created by extracting the adrenal fluid from an unwilling subject. In the game, some enemies are hooked on Adreno, making them even more fearsome (and erratic) than they normally are.
"Personal space became another fun thing to play with when in scenes with other races. I had read an article about how different races have very different personal space ratios....so another fun thing I did when I was in scenes with other races was stand a little too close. I'm taller than Julie Benz anyway but as Stahma I'm generally in 6 inch platforms. [In this scene] I was towring over her, and then without telling her was about 6 inches too close. She was like, 'this is weird, you're so creepy! Go away!' I thought this was a good, added physicaly dynamic to the scene." - Jaime Murray (Stahma)
Here you see Datak using a Castithan handshake. It's a traditional greeting for one of a higher liro [Caste] to give to someone of a lower liro (in this case, Councilman Ozin).
These children are playing "Skoptotch," a human-Votan hybrid hopscotch game. The object of the game is to dstract your opponents from hopping up the Fibonacci sequence of 1,1,2,3,5 and 8. It can be continued to a factor of 13 but more frequently than not is disregarded. The game starts with two children clapping alternate upright palms and singing "Catch a Sensoth by the toes. My mother and your mother were hanging out clothes. My mother punched your mother right in the nose. What color of blood came out?" The song refers to the ancient blood feuds amongst many Votan races.
Amanda and Kenya were raised in Manhattan, which remained in Votan control for several years during the Pale Wars - until the Earth Military Coalition reclaimed it. In 2046, it is the capital of the Earth Republic. Meanwhile, after being abandoned by their mother, Amanda and Kenya escaped Manhattan, but returned for a brief period when Earth Republic took control. They eventually made their way to Defiance.
The Votanis Collective (think of it like the alien European Union) was founded well before the Votans' arrival on Earth. The Collective is based in Brazil, in a region known as the Sulos Colony. Their new goal is to protect Votan culture at all cost. Like the Earth Republic, the Votanis Collective has a big interest in the wealth that can be found in the Bay Area (where the game is set).
