"My costumes are beautiful but sometimes so elaborate that they can be very uncomfortable - corsets, platforms, jewelry and holsters. I need one or two people to help me dress and sometimes it's so complicated and time consuming to get on and off I'll need 30 minutes just to dress. Sometimes, mortifyingly enough, I need to allocate time to just go to the loo!" - Jaime Murray (Stahma)
Alak is wearing a vintage "Home Taping is killing Music" t-shirt. It's from a British anti-copyright infringement campaign in the 1980s. You can't say Alak doesn't have a sense of irony.
The "Camp Reverie" that's mentioned in a small work camp about half a day's journey east of Defiance. It was built for petty criminals whose sentences are less than one year (since the Lawkeeper's solitary jail cell is reserved for misdemeanors and convicts awaiting transport to Vegas Prison). The inmates there tend to stay put, since the deadly creatures prowling the Badlands make escape on foot a dangerous proposition.
The Sensoth garage mentioned in this episode is located in the Hollows. It's run by a Sensoth whom the locals have nicknamed "Fozzie" (a joke that's lost on Fozzie himself). As a general rule, Sensoths are plodding and methodical, which makes them excellent mechanics and repairmen.
Along with his protection money racket, Datak gets a percentage of all the gambling and drug dealing that goes on in the Hollows.
The "Razor Rain" seen in this episode are arkfalls that break up in their descent, resulting in millions of superheated metal shards falling from the sky.
The St. Louis Gateway Arch was completed on October 28, 1965. It suffered from massive damage during the Pale Wars, and the fact that it survived Arkfall and the terraforming at all is something of a minor miracle. Former Mayor Nicolette Riordan commissioned the Arch renovation project, which is nearly complete. Notice the hole in the top? Alak always complains about the draft!
Kevlar ponchos are about the only protection against a Razor Rain storm. Without head-to-toe protection, Razor Rain can rip through exposed flesh, like the sharp object that impaled Tommy.
The various parts of the Irathient soul (the stomach, brain, heart and body) were originally disposed of in different ways. The brain submerged, the heart burned, the body buried. The stomach was left exposed to air so it could be given back to Gyakusa. As the seat of passion, the stomach is taken up to the sky (the realm of Irzu) and participates in an endless dance with one's ancestors.
Marusha is the Castithan word for "status." It encompasses both social status and reputation, which are intrinsically linked among the Castithan people.
As a failsafe, ark-brains were proframmed to preserve Votan life by any means. In this case, that meany temporarily repairing the damage to Sukar caused by the Razor Rain storm and sending him on quixotic quest to save the town. Unfortunately, some ark-brain fragments become damaged when they fell to Earth. These corrupted AIs built new bodies for themselves out of scrap machinery. You'll see them in the video game, where they're called Scrappers.
The strange alien bird is a keinti - a native Irathient flying predator. It defends its eggs vigorously, yet, at the same time, is known fofr eating its wearker offspring. The keinti is the animal avatar of the Irathient God Gyakusa, the god of passion.
Irathients wore silicone get filled prosthetics, applied to modify the forehead of the race. Each main Irathient character had a custom prosthetic created for them, but for secondary Irathients, we sculpted an A, B and C size prosthetics - A being the largest - that were generic.
In traditional Castithan culture, every individual, male or female, is confined to a set sphere of influence defined by their liro. Within a liro, however, there are further divisions defined by one's job, age and gender. Mibuniro (Castithan society) only functions if every person plays their specific role, and that role is set in stone at birth. A woman's sphere is defined by her liro, her family and her husband. While women of the Shanje Liro (The highest order) rarely cook or clean, they ultimately are responsible for the home. Provided that their liro responsibilites are taken care of, woman may do as they wish as long as it brings no shame on their liro. Their sphere of influence is just less than men.
