Need the top line info on what happened in Season 1? Have no fear, our Defiance: Season One 101 is here.
In 2046, on an Earth transformed following a long war between humans and aliens, Joshua Nolan and his adopted daughter Irisa – on the run from a vicious Liberata warlord - found themselves stuck in Defiance after their car was totaled.
Defiance – built on the ruins of what was St. Louis – served as an example of humans and aliens peacefully cohabitating. Except when they didn’t. Trying to maintain peace and order was Mayor Amanda Rosewater, whose high ideals were well matched to her tenacious nature.
Among the most prominent – and infamous – families in town were the Tarrs – Datak, wife Stahma and their teenage son Alak. Datak, a Castithan, had built a criminal empire and sought to gain power and respectability in town. Through totally criminal methods, mind you. Stahma, seemingly a demure and obedient wife, revealed herself to be a master strategist and often manipulated Datak into what SHE thought was smartest.
Alak was engaged in a romance with human Christie McCawley. Their love took star-crossed to a whole new level, especially because….
…Christie’s father, Rafe McCawley, HATED Datak. And, really wasn’t a fan of Votans (the Defiance word for aliens) in general. Rafe was one of the most powerful men in town, as he ran the mines at the heart of the town’s economy.
Rounding out the regular cast of characters was Kenya, Amanda’s little sister, who ran the local bar/brothel, the NeedWant.
When an alien race known as the Volge threatened to destroy Defiance, Nolan led a rebellion of the citizen’s against them. He was successful, and ended up the town law keeper!
Turns out the Volge attack was a manipulation of ex-mayor Nicolette Riordan in an attempt to clear the town so she could access an ancient alien artifact hidden in the mines
Amanda got a blast from the past when her ex, Connor Lang, showed up in an attempt to get Defiance to join the Earth Republic. The Earth Republic is a human-run governmental organization, but Amanda thought they were trouble. She was determined to keep Defiance as a free town, out of the E-Rep’s control.
Alak and Christie married, despite the cultural differences. Rafe and the Tarrs came to a kinda-sorta peace with each other.
Nicky managed to get the artifact from Rafe’s son, Quentin, in exchange for revealing that Quentin and Christie’s mom, Pilar, was alive – something Rafe had kept from them. Quentin went off to find her.
The local medical practitioner, Doc Yewll, knew Nicky’s plans were malicious so she offed her and hid the artifact!
Doc Yewll experimented on the gold artifact and discovered it was tied to Irisa. In fact, Irisa had a silver one just like it INSIDE her body. Gold and silver artifact merged inside Irisa, who seemingly went bonkers and took off.
Datak ran against Amanda for the Mayoral seat. Using his typical underhanded tactics, he won – and offered the Earth Republic the town’s mines in exchange for their support.
Stahma and Kenya had an affair, but when Kenya discovered Datak’s underhanded tactics in the election with Amanda, she threatened to expose the affair.
Datak got wind of the liaison and ordered Kenya to take care of Stahma. So, ever the efficiency expert, Stahma poisoned her.
Meanwhile, the Earth Republic arrived in town looking for the artifact. Turns out the two artifacts are a key to a Votan ship buried in the mines, with the potential for MASS destruction. Hence why the Earth Republic was interested in Defiance and why they wanted to find the missing Irisa.
Datak, meanwhile, realized the Earth Republic never had any intention of helping him. Feeling like a fool, he killed E-Rep bigwig Colonel Marsh.
While helping Irisa escape from the Earth Republic, Nolan was shot and killed.
Irisa, freaked out, entered the buried Votan ship where she saw a vision of a little girl – claiming she was a God, Irzu. Irzu told Irisa she could bring Nolan back to life if she agreed to become her vessel (read: weapon). Irisa consented and entered the ship, ostensibly activating it.
True to Irzu’s word, Nolan revived. Searching for Irisa, he saw the Earth Republic entering Defiance and announcing they’ve taken over the town.
