Nolan's done his best to uphold law and order in Defiance, but when the rubber hits the road, you can bet that his loyalties lie with his daughter over a bunch of paranoid townies. This was demonstrated by his willingness to square off with Rafe's whole crew over Irisa's fate. Only the Irathient girl's insistence warded off a potentially bloody outcome.
A big part of political maneuvering is knowing how to strike when your opportunity arises, even when it seems like it might not be in the best taste. Such was the case when Datak and Stahma seized on Amanda's illness to help maneuver the Casti gangster into position as acting mayor during the plague crisis.
Datak Deals Damage
Datak may have a taste for political subtlety, but remember that the man was a criminal who won Stahma's affection by killing off his rival. He demonstrated that side in spades when he slaughtered the Irathients holding Defiance's curative medicine hostage...then topped it off by acing Connor Lang in cold blood.
Ah, Connor, you handsome devil. We got hints of your past with Amanda and your attempts to serve as a civilizing influence in the Earth Republic...and then, you were gone, dispatched by Datak Tarr simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. We'll miss your mug and jaunty hat.
We know dramatic tension is good, but the strain that's been put on Nolan and Irisa's relationship since the incident in the Arch with Sukar has left us with a bit of a gross feeling in our stomachs. Seeing the two of them reconnect at the end of the episode after Nolan's recovery warmed the cockles of our sentimental hearts.
